Solid floors and beam and block came in because of costs ref. suspended timber floors. IMHO, suspended is a far better floor esp. in an extension where it will continue to provide through ventilation ( without any finicky detailing ).
This is block and beam (known as suspended floors). The block and beam system is a reinforced beam laid across or between walls. These beams are infilled with aircrete blocks and have the advantage of being a completely dry construction system.
I'm considering concrete beam and block to replace a suspended timber ground floor. Can anyone give an idea of the cost comparison for concrete and timber. I'm only looking at a room size of about 4m x 5m. Thanks, Chris.
A beam and block flooring system spans from external wall to external wall or from external wall to the partition or buttressing walls. Unlike the suspended timber flooring system, it is usual to leave the oversite as subsoil.
Suspended floors are normally made up of 2 materials, either timber joists or a concrete beam system. There are quite a lot of variations on these types of floor, mainly depending on what use you intend for that floor area and the floor finish.
